Welsh Narrow Gauge Railways
Steam Lives On

About this title

This film takes you on a tour around 10 of Wales' Narrow Gauge Railways. There is a trip along each line with am emphasis on showing normal operations, supplemented by scenes from gala events and photo charters. Locomotives seen include 'Dolgoch' which had the distinction of hauling the first ever train run by volunteers at the start of the heritage movement. Many locomotives are original to the actual lines or worked in Wales during an industrial career. These have been supplemented by imported machines.

Within the heritage movement the developments on the various narrow gauge railways have been as significant and impressive as can be seen anywhere, whether it is in restoration, new build, route re-opening or in meeting the challenge of changing circumstances.

The railways seen in this film have a mixed history with some built to serve slate quarries, some originally built as light railways with mixed traffic including the tourist trade, some making use of es standard gauge routes and, of course, the only rack and pinion railway in the UK.
