Description

For quite a few years now, trans-Atlantic air lines have vied with each other to offer bargain fares to the USA. So why not join the TeleRail team to find out exactly what is on offer on the ‘other side of the pond’? As you will discover the American railroad scene is as spectacular as it is varied, and makes an ideal country to savour all types of railway action in. To give you some idea of the wide variety of traffics and possible locations this superbly photographed video looks at the following specially selected topics and areas:-

• Sand Patch on the CSX mainline from Pittsburgh, where heavy freight trains take the grade through spectacular autumn scenery in the mountainous northern Alleghenies.

• The Maryland Midland a comparatively short private line through the superb rural scenery around Union Bridge, Maryland – also featuring street running.

• Contrasting commuter traffic including San Jose, Chicago, and the Brunswick to Washington services.

• Horseshoe Curve near Altoona and the spectacular route through the mountains to Cresson.

• West Brownsville where Conrail run regular huge daily coal trains right along the entire length of Main Street.

• Main line steam featuring Norfolk & Western Class ‘J’ 4-8-4 No. 611 at work near Christianburgh West Virginia. Also Ex-Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 en route to Hinton. As well as Two ex Canadian Pacific 4-6-2s (Class G5) double heading from Charlottesville. Plus Shay, Heisler, and Climax geared locos at work on the preserved Cass Scenic line.

• New York Hoboken and Grand Central Stations are contrasted, before we examine Amtrak services nationwide.

• The Norfolk & Southern Pochahontas division provides some stunning locations for coal traffic. At Chicago freight is seen being hump shunted and marshalled, and on the move (including double stacks) around this busy city.

• At Dallas the busy Santa Fe junction contrasts with switching operations at the local Santa Fe yard. The Rocky Mountains in deep snow provide a spectacular backdrop for heavy coal trains from Denver.

• In California Southern Pacific and Santa Fe traffic is contrasted at Cajon one of the most famous locations in the West.

In all it’s an unsurpassed feast of American railroad action, and a superb overview of this exciting country.
