A huge fleet of Tank engines for branch freight and shunting greatly out  numbered the more famous larger passenger engines. But without these small workhorses, which performed vital unspectacular work often away from the public eye, the nation’s rail system would have rapidly ground to a halt. Now ideal power for preserved lines, many have been preserved, a large selection of which are featured in this programme.  (Running time 60 minutes approx.)
